Malpighia Family

Description: A family of trees and lianas with simple, opposite, entire leaves. The stipules of Malpighiaceae are often borne on the petioles, which occurs in very few other families. Malpighiaceae trichomes are very characteristic, though they may be hard to see even with a hand lens. They are often described as “T-shaped” in the literature, but this is rather misleading. The vertical bar of the T is very short and generally not visible, and the horizontal arms of it can be quite long. The trichomes look more like long, skinny hairs pointed at both ends. Occasionally, from the side, you can see that they are fastened in the middle.

The flowers of Malpighiaceae are unusual in that, instead of nectar, most of them have an oil reward. They are pollinated by several genera of bees, which use the oil to feed to their larvae and sometimes in nest construction (Endress 1994). The petals are described as “clawed”—very narrow at the base and broadening towards the tips (Maas and Westra 1998).

Economic uses: The fruit of Byrsonima crassifolia, called nance, is commonly eaten in Central America. Some people find it delicious; it tastes like soap to me.

Descripción: Una familia de árboles y bejucos con hojas simples, opuestas, y enteras. Las estípulas de las Malpighiaceas muchas veces salen del pecíolo.Esta característica está raramente presente en otras familias. Los tricomas (pelos) de las Malpighiaceas son muy distintivos, aunque a veces es difícil verlos aún con una lupa de mano. Muchas veces en la literatura se dice que los tricomas tiene forma de “T,” pero eso es un poco confuso. Vistos desde arriba, los tricomas son largos, delgados y agudo en los dos extremos. A veces, mirandolos de lado, se puede ver que las tricomas están adheridas por el medio.

Las flores de las Malpighiaceas son inusuales: en lugar de néctar, muchas especies dan a las polinizadoras aceites como recompensa. Algunos géneros de abejas usan este aceite para alimentar a sus larvas y a veces para construir nidos (Endress 1994). Los pétalos son muy estrechos en la base y anchos hacia el ápice (Maas y Westra 1998).

Usos económicos: El nance es el fruto de Byrsonima crassifolia. A mucha gente le gusta el fruto, pero a mí me parece que tiene un sabor de jabón.

FIELD MARKS – opposite, simple leaves with T-shaped hairs, stipules intrapetiolar or free, fruit a berry with persistent sepals (5), each sepal is associated with a pair of slipper-shaped nectaries.
