Rue Family

Zanthoxylum panamense P. Wilson, a tree in the Rutaceae. Most of this genus is characterized by sharp spines on the trunk and branches, and, like the rest of the family, translucent punctuations (oil glands) on the leaves. Un árbol. Description: All the Rutaceae at La Selva are trees or shrubs. Rutaceae have alternate, pinnately compound leaves, except for the occasionally unifoliolate leaves of Citrus and a few genera with pinnately compound leaves. As in Swartzia simplex (Fabaceae-Papilionoideae), the unifoliolate leaves can be distinguished from simple leaves by the slightly winged and jointed petiole. This family is instantly recognizable with a hand lens: the leaves are covered with glandular punctations (areas in the leaf where essential oils are stored), which show up as regularly spaced translucent dots when the leaf is held up to the light. The punctations along the leaf margin tend to be larger. The broken leaf releases a pungent and usually citrusy odor. Zanthoxylum can be recognized by its spiny trunk and branches.

Economic uses: Citrus fruits (oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruit, etc.), mainly from introduced Old World species, are economically important throughout the tropics and subtropics. Some Zanthoxylum species contribute flavorings to traditional Chinese and Indian food.

Descripción: Todas las Rutaceas aquí son árboles o arbustos. Las Rutaceas tienen hojas alternas, y pinnaticompuestas aparte de las hojas a veces unifolioladas de Citrus y algunos géneros con hojas digitadas. Así como en Swartzia simplex (Fabaceae-Papilionoideae), se puede distinguir las hojas unifolioladas de las hojas simples: las unifolioladas tienen el pecíolo ligeramente alado y articulado. Se puede reconocer la familia muy fácilmente con una lupa de mano: las hojas tienen puntos translúcidos donde son almacenados aceites, que aparecen cuando la luz está detrás de la hoja. Los puntos cerca de las márgenes usualmente son más grandes. La hoja estrujada tiene un olor fuerte usualmente cítrico. Se reconoce el genero Zanthoxylum por las ramas y el tronco espinoso.

Usos económicos: Los frutos del genero Citrus (naranjas, limones, toronja, etc.), especies introducidas del viejo mundo, son importantes en todas zonas tropicales del mundo. Algunas especies de Zanthoxylum dan sabores distintivos a la comida típica de Inda y China.
